Landet har begrenset jernbanetransport til Turkmenistan. Det er to jernbaneprosjekt igang på nåværende tidspunkt, en mellom Herat og den iranske byen Mashad, mens den annen bygges mellom Kandahar og Quetta i Pakistan. De mange menneskene som reiser fra en by til en annen benytter en busservice. Biler er i den senere tiden blitt bredt tilgjengelige med Land Rover -, BMW -, Toyota -, Nissan - og Hyundai-forhandlere i Kabul. Et stort antall brukte biler importeres også fra De forente arabiske emirater. Nesten alle veier i landet gjenoppbygges.
Mange av landets historiske monument er blitt skadet i krigene de siste årene. De to kjente Buddha - statuer i Bamiyan - provinsen ble ødelagt av Taliban , da de ble oppfattet som symbol for en annen religion.

André kjente steder er byene Herat, Ghazni og Balkh. Minareten av Jam, i Hari Rud dal, befinner seg på UNESCOs liste over verdenens kultur- og naturarvsted.

Befolkningen i Afghanistan er dyktige ryttere og sporten kjent som Buzkashi er populær. Afghansk mynde kommer herfra.

Før Taliban tok makten var byen Kabul hjem for mange musikere som mestret både tradisjonell og moderne afghansk musikk, særlig i løpet av Nauroz-Festivalen. Kabul i midten av det 20. århundrede er blitt sammenlignet med Wien i det 18. og 19. århundrede.
